Antarctica: A journey of connection, collaboration and shared joy

I recently returned from an extraordinary journey to Antarctica, a land of pristine wilderness, breathtaking landscapes, and unparalleled wildlife. It truly was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.  Yet, as I reflect on this adventure alongside a group of like-minded women, I find that it was the intangible elements that made it truly exceptional. It wasn’t just about the sights we saw; it was about the connections we forged, the support we provided one another, and the pure joy we shared in each other’s experiences.

One of the most memorable aspects of my expedition was the camaraderie that developed among us. Each member of our group brought their unique skills, perspectives, and personalities, which enriched our collective experiences.

We supported one another through challenges, celebrated each other’s accomplishments, and revelled in the joy of exploration together. It was a beautiful reminder of the power of community and shared purpose we and created many “best days ever” along the way.

As our trip progressed, we found ourselves immersed in unforgettable moments. Sailing into Neko Harbour brought a sense of excitement and anticipation as a small group of us got ready to kayak amongst the ice, seals, and penguins while it was snowing stands out as a highlight. As the nerves set in around the logistics of getting in our kayaks from the Zodiacs, we were able to support one another through encouragement and lots of laughter. There was a sense of being part of something magnificent even when we awkwardly transferred on and off our kayaks. The sheer wonder of being surrounded by such incredible wildlife, in one of the most remote places on Earth, was a feeling like no other. And to experience this alongside such inspiring women made it all the more special.

For many travellers, Antarctica offers so many experiences that can challenge us in ways that leave lasting impressions on our lives moving forward. The Polar Plunge is a rite of passage when travelling to Antarctica and we were greeted with sunny skies and no wind on the day. Listening to everyone discuss whether they were going to take the ‘plunge’ reminded me of working with clients that are nervous to try something new or challenging. Whether we were excited, nervous, or even scared to do the polar plunge, our group of amazing women supported one another with compassion, encouragement, and respect for individual decisions. Completing the Polar Plunge left me with a sense of belonging and achievement.

Antarctica & Occupational Therapy

Beyond the adventure itself, I couldn’t help but draw parallels between my Antarctic expedition and my work as an occupational therapist and supervisor. In both contexts, it is the connections we forge, the shared values we uphold, and the support we offer one another that truly enhance our lives.

We work with amazing individuals and by taking the time to be present when spending time with them can also leave a lasting impression on their lives and the way they view themselves. Feeling connected to a community and being inspired by different people entering our lives can provide a sense of belonging.

It can also give us the support we may need to make change in our lives by connecting with those who plant those seeds of encouragement.

In my role, I have witnessed firsthand the profound transformations that occur when individuals feel supported and valued. Whether it’s collaborating with clients to help them achieve their goals or working with colleagues to advance our profession, the power of connection is undeniable. Just as in Antarctica, where our shared experiences enriched our journey, so too do our shared experiences in the workplace enrich our lives.

So, as I return to my role with a renewed sense of energy and commitment, I carry with me the lessons learned from Antarctica. I am excited to continue fostering connections, collaborating with others, and sharing in the joy of seeing individuals grow and shine. Ultimately, it is these moments of connection and shared joy that shape our lives and make them truly extraordinary.
